Funeral Food

I awoke with the memory of Aunt Lou Ella’s fried peach pies on my tongue. Funeral food. Has one of my mother’s people died in Mississippi?

Funeral food. My goodness. The idea is enough to fill an entire book.

I hope not. I remember the hot pickled cauliflower from my grandfather’s funeral when I was twelve. I had never eaten it before, and never wanted it since, but on that day there was something about the mixture of too much heat followed by a lingering sweetness I could not get enough of.

I like the haiku like brevity of this, and how the provocative combination of the pie so full of sweetness and life (peaches) and the notion of “funeral food” are answered by a question that suggests both the rational and irrational at the same time.

So many people have premonition-like dreams, which must be disturbing for the dreamer awaiting the outcome.

Ah, yes. I grew up in Mississippi but, of course, funeral food is a well worn tradition in the south. Your mention of peach fried pies makes me long for one of my mawmaw’s….with tears in my eyes.

Thanks for stopping by my blog….I’m glad I’ve found all of yours as I can see we are kindred spirits. Or at least southern sisters!
